Gardaí have begun clamping down on so-called boy racers in the Dundalk and north Louth areas.

Details were taken of the occupants of up to 30 cars in the car park of Slieve Foy Forest Park on the Carlingford to Omeath Road on Sunday evening ahead of a suspected meeting, while six cars were seized.

A further car was seized at the Ballymascanlon Roundabout last Thursday after the driver was arrested on a dangerous driving charge.

That area has had ‘boy racer’ problems for some time and the crack down will surely be welcomed by road users in the area as well as local residents.

Memorial walk to be held to commemorate seven local Brigadistas who fought in Spanish Civil War

Michael O’Riordan who carried the flag of Catalonia across the River Ebro during the final offensive of the Spanish Civil War

On July 25th 1938, Republicans in Spain crossed the River Ebro to launch what was the final offensive of the Army of the Spanish Republic in the Spanish Civil War. The XV brigade crossed the river near Asco with Michael O’Riordan carrying the flag of Catalonia.

On Saturday, Friends of the International Brigades Ireland (FIBI) are planning to stage a memorial walk or “Siúlóid na Saoirse” to the carn near the upper Sliabh Foye Forest car park.

The carn commemorates the seven known Brigadistas from the surrounding area, six of whom gave their lives in the struggle for freedom in Spain. The location, overlooking Carlingford Lough, is also an appropriate setting to remember Michael O’Riordan’s crossing of the Ebro.

It is hoped to assemble at the shore in Omeath, beside the Granvue Hotel, at about 9.30am on Saturday morning.

The walk will commence at 10pm, following the “lost tracks” of the long closed Dundalk, Newry and Greenore railway line between Omeath and Carlingford, now re-established as a “Greenway” walking route.

After approximately two miles, the group will leave the “tracks” to ascend through the Sliabh Foye Forest Park to the carn, where a short tribute to all the Brigadistas will take place.

From there they will return on a slightly different route to the Granvue Hotel where it is hoped to organise a short social event. The overall walk is about six miles but the carn is easily accessible by car for those who wish to attend the commemoration but not participate in the walk.

This is only a preliminary plan/suggestion and any other proposals or ideas are welcome.

The walk will be at least 90 minutes each way, which would leave the group back in Omeath for about 2pm.

In Mid-Louth, the number of Gardaí in Ardee has fallen from 30 to 26, while in Castlebellingham there is now half the number there was five years ago with two Gardaí as opposed to four in September 2010. Louth continues to have one Garda present.

The Loughantarve estate in Knockbridge is to benefit with improved access to the village

As many as 30 different areas in the Dundalk Municipal District area are to have work carried out to improve access for people with disabilities.

Earlier this week local councillors agreed to allocate €49,000 in funding for the work from their discretionary budget.

Areas set to benefit include Dundalk, Knockbridge, Omeath and Carlingford.

Cllr Maeve Yore told LMFM that this was a starting point to deal with problems not just facing those in wheelchairs but also the elderly, the infirm and people with buggies.

One of the main areas to be upgraded is in front of the Loughantarve estate in Knockbridge, with slow crossing ahead road markings to be installed along with an improved footpath into the village.

Blackrock is set to benefit from five disabled bays and drop footpaths at five locations along Main Street. There will also be footpath repairs between Wallace’s Road and Rock Court, as well as to the footpath outside The Loakers.

In Carlingford work will take place at Castle Hill and Newry Street with disabled bays to be installed at Donard Lodge, the junction at Valentine’s, Bradley’s Pharmacy, Memories Boutique and the Village Pharmacy while in Omeath footpath repairs will take place between Mulligan’s Shop and the Esso Garage.

Garda Tony Golden RIP

An IRA terror suspect out on bail shot dead a garda responding to a domestic incident in Omeath last night.

The unarmed and uniformed officer murdered in the gun attack was a married father of three.

The officer, Garda Tony Golden – who lived in Blackrock – was responding to a 999 call that a woman felt threatened in a domestic incident in the village.

She was also seriously injured in the hail of bullets and was being treated in hospital. The gunman – named locally as 24-year-old Adrian Crevan Mackin – then turned the handgun on himself, taking his own life.

It is understood Gardaí escorted the woman to the house in Mullach Alainn to collect her personal items. When the woman entered the home she went to the bedroom where her and Garda Golden were shot.

The killing of the courageous young garda caused widespread shock and revulsion. Tributes were paid to the slain officer by his superiors and the government.

Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan said she was deeply saddened to hear of the death of her colleague while carrying out his duties.

Garda Representative Association President Dermot O’Brien described Garda Golden as a ‘hero’.

“Ireland has lost a hero; he laid his life on the line for the community he served,” he told Newstalk’s Breakfast this morning.

“Tony was a married man with three young children, and yesterday he went to a call and, sadly like all members of An Garda Síochána, his dedication to serve and protect has ended with the tragic loss of his life.”

The series of events which led to the shootings unfolded at a house in the Mullach Alainn estate in Omeath around 6pm. There were reports that young children may have been in the house at the time of the shooting.

It is alleged a Northern-registered BMW car seen driving away from the scene was later stopped by the PSNI in Newry.

A Garda source said the motorist, a Polish national, may be a potential witness to what happened in the quiet housing estate.

As a mark of respect, all meetings, classes and social events scheduled for this week in the Dolmen Centre have been cancelled.

Garda Golden was shot in the line of duty while attending a domestic disturbance in Mullach Alainn shortly after 6pm on Sunday. His murderer also died in the shooting with a woman, who was also shot, in a serious condition in hospital.

Garda Tony Golden RIP

The father of a woman critically injured in a domestic dispute alerted gardaí to shots which left Garda Tony Golden and a gunman dead, investigating gardaí said today.

At a press conference at Dundalk Garda Station, Supt Gerry Curley said Garda Golden, a father-of-three, had taken a statement from a woman by prior arrangement on Sunday afternoon regarding a complaint of alleged domestic abuse.

Afterwards, Garda Golden, accompanied by the woman and her father, went to her home at 16 Mullach Alainn, Omeath.

Both Garda Golden and the woman entered the house, while her father remained outside.

“Shortly afterwards gunshots were heard in the house. Her father immediately raised the alarm and the gardaí were contacted by way of 999,” Supt Curley said.

When emergency services responded, they found the body of Garda Golden with a number of gunshot wounds which proved to be fatal.

The woman’s partner, dissident republican Adrian Crevan Mackin, was found with a fatal gunshot wound.

The woman received a number of “serious gunshot wounds” and is in a critical condition in Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. It is understood the couple have been together for several years since the woman finished school four years ago and have two children, both under the age of four. The children were not in the house at the time of the shooting.

Supt Curley said a firearm was recovered at the scene.

“A full investigation is now underway into all aspects surrounding this incident,” he said.

Speaking at the press conference, Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan said it was a “sad and tragic” day for the force and local community.

Garda Golden was originally from Ballina, Co Mayo, and was the father of two girls and a boy under the age of eight.

He had been living in Blackrock, Co Louth, with his family and was based in Omeath Garda station.

“I’m particularly mindful that this is the second tragedy that has been visited on the local community here and, in particular, the members in Dundalk district,” the commissioner said.

She said some of the gardaí at the scene of the shooting on Sunday were also on the scene of the fatal shooting of detective Adrian Donohoe in Belurgan in January 2013, following a botched raid.

Nobody has yet been charged with Garda Donohoe’s killing.

“It is a very traumatic time. An investigation has commenced and all aspects of the investigation will be completely followed,” she said.

Commissioner O’Sullivan also paid tribute to Garda Golden’s dedication and service over his 11 years in the force.

“Tony was a very respected member who was held in high esteem. He lived in the community, he worked in the community and he served the community,” Ms O’Sullivan said.

“He served the community with dignity, pride and distinction. He was a very proud family man.. the loss is unthinkable for Nicola, her parents and the extended family.”

When questioned over issues of personal safety for Garda Golden given the threat posed by Crevan Mackin, Ms O’Sullivan said investigations were continuing.

“There are dangerous people right throughout the community. Without going into the circumstance of this case, there is an investigation underway, all the circumstances leading up to these tragic events will be fully established,” she said.

“It’s not appropriate to comment further at this time over any of the individuals involved, other than to say … there is always that unknown factor,” she said.

“So, when people go about their duty, they go about it with diligence, bravery and courage, without fear or favour. I think that’s a very important thing to remember on a day like today.

“The job the men and women of An Garda Síochána do, they do it courageously, bravely and unfortunately as of today 88 members have lost their lives in tragic ways…”
